My research
My research interest is focused on the historical trajectories of Mapudungun. Several challenges are connected to this endeavour. First, Mapudungun is a language isolate, which means that no known relatives of the language are available to conduct a historical comparison to ascertain linguistic forms of the remote past.
Despite this, there is a relatively substantial historical record of Mapudungun available. The earliest sources were published in the 17th century and the written record continued to increase throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. Thanks to this, we can look back at the attested internal changes that have occurred in the history of the language, comparing them to what is typologically and theoretically plausible.
My most recent works (Berríos, 2026; Berríos & Salamanca, 2024) explore a historical rule of fricativisation that altered the lexicon of Mapudungun, leaving remnants in a distinct class of verbs.
